Blackjack:

Two card holding of 21 – an Ace with any picture card or 10 (dealt only as the first two cards).

Box:
The betting position for players on which to place their wagers.

Boxed card:
A card face up (showing) when in the shoe.

Bridging:
Method of payment to a Blackjack when after sizing, the remainder of the payment is placed on top of the two piles in the middle.

Burning cards:
Cards withdrawn from the game normally at the beginning of a new shoe (N.B. not applicable to the UK).

Card counter:  
A player who improves his chances of winning by counting the probability of high or low value cards being dealt at a certain time.

Chemmy shuffle:         
The mixing of cards face down on the table at the beginning of the first game.

Cutting card:   
A plastic card (usually red or black) used to ‘cut’ the decks – aka ‘postillion’.

Deck:  
Pack of 52 playing cards without jokers.

Discard holder:           
Plastic holder fixed to the table on the dealer’s right side, where the cards are placed following each game.

Double down: 
Player may ‘double’ his original wager after being dealt 9, 10 or 11 with two cards.

Draw:  
To request an additional card following the initial deal.

Even money:   
Payment in lieu of Blackjack when the Dealer is showing an Ace.

Fan:
Spreading the six packs of cards across the table face up, for inspection purposes.

Float tray:       
Metal tray placed in front of the dealer which contains cash value chips.

Half shoe:       
Cutting the 6 decks after the shuffle into two equal parts – thus reducing the odds for any card counters.

Hand:  
The two cards dealt to the player in the initial deal.

Hard total:       
A hand in which the Ace counts as .     

Hit:      
To request an additional card following the initial deal.

Initial deal:     
The dealing of two cards to each player who has placed a wager in a box, and one card to the dealer.

Insurance:       
Whenever the first card dealt to the dealer is an ace, each customer who has a Blackjack may make an insurance wager which wins if the dealer's second card is a picture or ten, and loses if the dealer’s second card is any other card.

Insurance line:
Printed area on the table layout in which ‘Insurance’ wagers are placed.

Plunger: 
a clear plastic paddle used to push cash and documents down the drop box.

Pay and take: 
Method of payment when levels of certain value chips are low. Dealer will pay with high value chips and remove the original wager. This is only done with the approval of the table inspector.

Picture card:   
Any card which is a King, Queen or Jack. All have value of 10. aka court card.

Postillion:       
A plastic card (usually red or black) used to ‘cut’ the decks- aka cutting card.

Riffle shuffle:  
Shuffle of cards.

Shoe:  
Plastic box into which the 6 decks are placed following the shuffle and are then dealt from.

Soft total:                    
A hand in which the Ace counts as 11..

Split:   
Dividing two cards of the same value following the initial deal thus creating two hands.

Stand
A decision by the player not to take any additional cards to their hand.

Stand off:        
A draw - the value of the player’s cards are equal to the value of the dealer’s cards. No win no loss.

Strip shuffle:   
Part of the shuffle procedure, normally associated with a poker shuffle  .     

Subsequent deal:       
The ‘action’ following the initial deal, when player’s have the opportunity to request additional cards, ‘split’ or ‘double-down’ or ‘stand’.

Too many:                  
The value of cards in excess of 21.
